"Who are you to decide what would make her happy ?"
Well, he is a human being who has something called "free will". He can choose to live - or not - one way or another, while she can't.
The happiness you may have in a situation which doesn't offer any alternative isn't happiness, it's illusion of happiness. Y'know, things you may have learned with Plato's allegory of the Cave in High School, or in The Matrix if you're not really scolar focused.
I'm a bit sarcastic here but i know Japanese struggle a little with concepts such as "freedom" IRL, and they usually tend to manifest their problems and criticize them particularly well with manga characters (SNK is a good example), so i'm a little disapointed. But i guess i'm too harsh regarding this little one.
If it wasnt cancelled then it must have been rushed to finish due to not making enough sells or something, the premise of their being an organization of 12 foes plus a big bad shouldnt have ended in 5 vols especially when it took roughly 25 to defeat one with the proper build up and backstory, but thats my take
