I have thought about this a lot over the years and I have a take on it that's probably not going to be popular, but what the he'll (and this is coming from someone who has been in abusive relationships so keep that in mind). Hokuto slaps her twice, but neither time is actually in an abusive moment. Once she is talking down on herself (if memory serves correctly) and won't stop and is hysterical. In the other he is genuinely terrified for her and the fact that he almost lost her the same way he lost his mother. Was slapping a good call? No. But at the same time, in both situations he was dealing with overwhelming emotions that he had never experience before and panicked. He made had emotional reactions, but he isn't abusive and isn't a wife beater. Their relationship isn't perfect and may not always be healthy, but they continue moving forward and trying to make things better.
