I can see why Hori did this. It would be safe and easy doing the generic ending where MC gets everything like what happened to Naruto. However, Hori wants to reinforce the theme the manga is building. "Everyone can become the greatest hero". People confuse this as becoming the No.1 Pro hero which is just plain wrong.
^ This. This is exactly what's happening. They're not in a cycle of unstoppable life and death, they're writing over the old timeline with the current one, but since the brother was dead he wasn't fused with his past self and was deleted from existence, at least from what we were told.
You can tell it's his first work. There is a roughness to it, both in terms of art and the way the story is structured, but that's part of its charm and it feels more sincere in ways his later works don't. I still think this is Mashima's best work by a significant margin.
