Did you forget lou LOST and got betrayed so hard only his literal ego and some bones survived? Whoever did that to him still is around and doesn't need some dude to stab themselves to come out, risking their own sanity in the process.

Not to mention, he risks his sanity in the process. The MC basically dying when faces with a strong enemy, with no reliable way to come back? That's LITERALLY the same tension as before. Only this way, his body survives. So all the tension is still there even for regular fights that aren't against whoever beat Lou originally
