This was the first manga I ever read, and it turned out to be the best decision I made that March.

A fun and exciting take on life with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

    Summary:

Haruna Nagashima wants what almost every high school girl desires: a boyfriend. An ex-baseball player with unmatched optimism, I'm not exaggerating when I say that. She follows all the magazine and manga advice—makeup, clothes, hair—but still wonders, "What am I doing wrong?"

In a Cinderella-like twist, she meets Yoh Kamiyama, and yes, there really was a shoe involved. He helps her and then leaves, leaving Haruna curious about who he is. After failing to attract guys, her friend suggests looking at it from a sports perspective. What does every team need? A coach. Who better to coach her than the school's top guy, Yoh?

[SPOILER] It’s no real spoiler since they’re always together on the manga covers, but Yoh agrees (you would too if Haruna stalked you) as long as she promises not to fall in love with him. "Okay."

If you think this is just another shojo manga where they get together and live happily ever after...think again. They are too mismatched for that. Yoh is serious, aloof, popular, and 'hates girls.' Haruna is honest, tomboyish, and wants to fall in love. Koukou Debut is their journey into knowing and accepting each other for who they are.

    End of Summary.

Characters: None of them are perfect, and each has qualities they wish they didn't have.

Haruna - Though she sounds like a stereotype as the protagonist, she isn’t. Her thought process and actions are amazing. She is gullible and sweet but also strong and stands up for what she believes is right.

Yoh - Beneath his cold exterior lies the sweetest smile you’ve ever seen. Despite disliking girls because they 'randomly get depressed and cry,' he decides to coach her, showing he wants to help deep down.

Asami - Yoh’s younger sister, with a real brother complex. You don’t notice it immediately, but her character seemed the most real, maybe because underneath her pretty exterior, she was as human and scared as anyone else.

Other characters include Asaoka and Fumiya, Yoh’s friends, who play parts in the manga without extensive backstories. Their present lives add light to the story. And let’s not forget Mami, Haruna’s best friend. She’s the best kind of friend because she supports you even when she thinks you're completely insane.

The art in the manga was great. The characters' expressions were unique and believable. Just because you know their characters doesn’t mean they shouldn’t feel human. Honestly, watching how Haruna dresses herself made me laugh.

In the end, it teaches you the best lesson: who you are is amazing, and you shouldn’t change.

With that in mind, I’ll leave you with a quote from Haruna:

"I'd rather strike out by swinging than just watching it pass by."

I have read 8 volumes of this title so far, so I thought it was a good time to write a review about it. :)

Story: This is a typical high school comedy-romance with some minor dramatic elements. The story revolves around Haruna, a tomboyish girl who, upon entering high school, decides to find a boyfriend. That's when she meets Yo, a super popular guy known for his expertise in such matters, and she asks him to be her trainer. It's quite a cliché story, but still enjoyable. As the narrative progresses, the relationship between Yo and Haruna develops further.

Art: The artwork is adequate for a shoujo manga, but I've seen better. I didn't appreciate how the artist sometimes depicted characters with their mouths open, which looked somewhat unnatural. However, the eye designs are pretty good, and the hair looks nice too.

Characters: This is the strongest aspect of the series—the characters. Haruna, the tomboyish, masculine girl who played baseball in middle school and had no time for anything else, is incredibly optimistic, kind-hearted, and naive. When faced with tough situations, she always gives her best effort. Yo starts off as the popular pretty boy type. He seems to have had some bad experiences with girls in the past and can't stand them. Despite that, he is incredibly smart, doesn't misunderstand serious situations (which often happens in many shoujo manga), and has a good personality. Their friends are also quite interesting characters.

Enjoyment: This manga is truly enjoyable from start to finish. I laughed and cried at different parts of the story (okay, I only cried once—I know everything turns out fine at the end of each volume :D). I couldn't stop reading it; I devoured all 8 released volumes as quickly as possible. And I'm still eager for more. :)

Huruna is far from your average adorable manga character. Having been a dedicated baseball player throughout middle school, she possesses an inexhaustible supply of energy. Despite never having time for relationships back then, she has now shifted her focus from baseball to boys. With a lack of fashion sense and a physique more akin to that of a male's, Haruna sets her sights on love.

Haruna is in search of a coach—can Yoh assist her? Yoh, the quintessential hot guy with an endless stream of fangirls, hides a shy and sweet personality beneath his tough exterior. Unlike typical manga where the outgoing guy pairs up with the timid girl needing protection, this story flips the script!

This manga is currently my favorite, right after Secret Girl. It isn't overrated, but Haruna's quirky personality sometimes gets under my skin and makes me shake my head. However, that’s precisely what adds to its humor! Romantic and funny, it's a must-read!!!

Koukou Debut is a story about a sporty, tomboyish girl with absolutely no sense of fashion who is on a quest to find love during her high school years. She's dense and stubborn, which often leads to misunderstandings and lots of laughter. By chance, she meets Yoh and begs him to become her personal image consultant so she can finally get a boyfriend. Yoh agrees but only under the condition that she doesn't fall in love with him because he’s incredibly attractive and generally dislikes girls (though he’s not mean). And as we all expect, things don’t go exactly as planned...

When I saw Haruna and Yoh getting together very early in the series, I was initially disappointed, thinking the manga would turn into a predictable tale filled with typical dating scenes like cultural festivals, summer festivals, beach trips, and so on. They did indeed experience all those things... but in unexpectedly different ways (LOL), and that's the charm of this manga - it transforms what seems like ordinary high school life into something unpredictable. Thus, their seemingly typical dating life turns out to be anything but typical. And I adore it.

Whenever the manga lacks those heart-thumping moments, it more than compensates with the laughter brought by Haruna. No matter what challenges they face, Haruna and Yoh always overcome them with their unwavering love and trust for each other - making you feel warm and fuzzy inside and wishing you had such a relationship too.

Koukou Debut breaks away from conventional norms and shows us that love doesn't always fit into a typical mold. Haruna and Yoh are polar opposites who might seem perpetually mismatched, but their love is one built on endurance, faith, and trust. I will always be cheering for them.

Another High School Romance ♥ I adore this manga so much that I feel compelled to write a review! The characters are flawless, and the story itself is an impeccable package. It's brimming with laughter, tears, valuable lessons, and romance - truly a must-read. I won't give away more details; just dive into this fantastic manga, and you'll find yourself falling for Yoh repeatedly.

I even ended up in an argument with my boyfriend because I kept comparing him to Yoh. Oh my goodness, how foolish of me! Comparing a fictional character to my real-life partner!!! Somebody please put me out of my misery! So here’s a bit of advice: don’t make the same blunder. XD

So what are you waiting for? Read this NOW!

This manga is an incredibly delightful, heartwarming, and tear-jerking story that you can't help but fall in love with. Haruna, a former softball queen and tomboy, has just entered high school. She decides to abandon her softball-playing ways to focus on finding a boyfriend. Unfortunately, without anyone's help—not even Mami, her long-suffering middle school friend—she fails miserably. That is until she meets Yoh, a second-year student whose cynical and bitter demeanor makes him nearly unapproachable to most girls. However, Haruna, being naive and eager, isn't deterred. After much pleading, Yoh agrees to be her love coach, under the condition that she doesn't develop feelings for him.

The story is a sweet and simple tale that requires no embellishments, theatrics, or "rich high school kids" to make it interesting. Kazune Kawahara does an excellent job of telling a straightforward high school love story, as ordinary as they come, without overdoing it. Haruna is the most lovable heroine I've ever encountered; her naivety and innocence will make you laugh and smile. Yoh may lack depth at times, but his awkwardness combined with his willingness to do whatever it takes to help Haruna is so endearing that you can't help but adore him.

The only complaint I have about this fantastic manga is that the mangaka leaves one thread unresolved and unfinished. I won't reveal anything to avoid spoiling the ending or any part of the story, but if you read it, you might understand what I mean.

I would highly recommend this manga to anyone who enjoys shoujo or just a heartwarming romance. It is definitely worth reading.

    High School Debut Manga Review
    By: Kazune Kawahara
    December 26, 2019

    Plot:

In today's world, many people are drawn to those who dress well, apply makeup, and wear stylish outfits. Girls often aim to attract someone special by enhancing their appearance. This story introduces a girl who hopes for love despite her unconventional fashion sense. She meets a boy who becomes her mentor, teaching her how to dress better and understand herself. Their relationship evolves naturally as they grow closer and support each other.

    Characters:

I appreciate the character development in this story. Each character learns to face their emotions, even when scared. The male lead is especially attentive, understanding the female protagonist without words. He makes choices based on what he knows will make her happy. The narrative unfolds slowly, allowing readers to witness their journey of mutual understanding and affection.

    Art:

The artwork resembles Dengeki Daisy, a style I've always admired. The body proportions and gender distinctions are particularly appealing. Characters' personalities shine through their appearances and attitudes, and their expressions during moments of shyness, confusion, or pain are perfectly captured.

    Enjoyment:

This manga embodies what I enjoy most—humorous yet heartfelt stories. Watching characters fall in love and engage in awkward situations is endearing. Teenagers will surely love this tale about first loves, dates, kisses, hand-holding, and sweet gestures. Reading such manga occasionally is delightful.

    Ending:

The story concludes with the girl overdoing it again, which sets it apart from typical endings involving marriage and children. It feels like a new beginning, with the boy's reaction being both funny and cute. Her efforts may be excessive, but his response adds a charming touch to the finale.

OMG, I can't even put into words how this manga makes me feel! It's absolutely beautiful the way the story unfolds. Haruna is unlike any other shoujo manga protagonist, and it really shows. Yoh is the most caring and loving boyfriend I've ever come across in a manga! At first glance, he seems shy, rough, and cold, but as you get to know him, you realize that couldn't be further from the truth. He genuinely cares about everyone he loves.

I truly loved reading this; it's definitely my comfort zone manga. Whenever I feel a bit sad and need a pick-me-up, I know I can turn to this and everything will be okay. It has the perfect blend of comedy, romance, innocence, and just a touch of drama—nothing too overwhelming though.

If you're ever feeling like you want to believe there's good in this world, or if you need a reminder that there's a happy ending for everyone, give this manga a try. You won't regret it!

If you're new to reading manga, I recommend starting with this one. Initially, as I read the first few chapters, I thought I knew where the story was heading. I gave this manga a score of 8 because certain elements are reminiscent of other shoujo stories, such as the unpopular girl meeting the popular guy and her attempt at a makeover to find a boyfriend. Despite following this familiar pattern, I still found the story quite engaging.

Haruna Nagashima's character is both fun and sometimes annoying in her naivety, which I enjoyed. Yoh Komiyama's character is like a tsundere version of a typical male lead, which amused me. The artwork is excellent; I appreciated how the artist illustrated the comedy and romantic atmosphere between the couple. Overall, I had a good time reading this manga. It's cute and funny, and I liked how the supporting characters played their roles in the couple's development. The author also did a great job showing the reality of romance. As for the ending—well, that's how the author chose to wrap up the story.

I rarely write reviews, but when I do, they're honest ones.

Koukou Debut is perfect for anyone who enjoys cute, adorably silly, and somewhat predictable stories. It shares a similar humor with Lovely Complex and reminded me a lot of Kimi ni Todoke in terms of art and story structure.

    Story -

The plot revolves around a high school girl who has never had a boyfriend. She seeks out a love coach and BAM, she gets a sexy male lead as her mentor. As you move through the first few volumes (maybe 1-4), this coaching aspect fades into the background. If you enjoy shojo humor sprinkled with bits of romance, this manga is for you. The ending isn't totally disappointing like some others; I liked how it concluded, to some extent.

Warning - There's plenty of cheesy moments here, but who doesn't love a bit of cheese? The pacing is just right, not too slow or too fast.

    Art -

The artwork is very fitting. It's well-drawn, features good toning, simple yet effective, and has nice line breaks. No complaints from me.

    Character -

The characters are thoughtfully developed. Usually, I'd forget a character or two in other manga, but here, I remember them all. Each one has their unique personality and is portrayed excellently.

The main female character isn't completely clueless. She's a tomboy, which suits her perfectly. She has her moments but remains likable because she's not overly complex. Just normal, with a touch of naivety about fashion and such things.

    Enjoyment -

I absolutely loved this. One of the few series I've stuck with because it grabbed me so tightly from the first volume.

    Overall -

    LOVE IT. READ IT. NOW.

Side note: There's a live-action movie adaptation that differs quite a bit from the original story, but it was still enjoyable to watch.
