In 1924, mountaineers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine embarked on a daring challenge: to be the first to scale Mount Everest. However, they vanished during the final stages of their ascent, leading to one of mountaineering's greatest mysteries—did they ever reach the summit? In 1993, in Kathmandu, Japanese photographer Makoto Fukamachi discovered a vintage camera in an antique store, which he believed might have belonged to Mallory. The camera, however, ended up in the hands of "Bikha Sanp," a burly Japanese man whom Fukamachi suspects might be Jouji Habu, a legendary Japanese mountaineer who disappeared several years ago. Unfortunately for Fukamachi, Bikha Sanp refuses to talk and leaves with the camera. With the trail gone cold, Fukamachi has only one course left: to delve into Habu's past and uncover what might have brought the former climber to Nepal. For the sake of rewriting mountaineering history, Fukamachi begins his investigation, a quest that will lead him to the highest point on Earth—the summit of the gods. "The Summit of the Gods" is based on Baku Yumemakura's novel of the same name. The manga series won the Excellence Prize in the manga division at the Japanese Ministry of Culture's Media Arts Festival in 2001 and the Best Art Award at the French Angouleme Festival in 2005. The original novel won the 11th Shibata Renzaburo Award in 1998. The series was published in English as "The Summit of the Gods" by Ponent Mon/Fanfare from September 30, 2009, to March 26, 2015. In 2014, the publisher's translation of the fourth volume was nominated for the Eisner Award in the Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia category. A live-action film adaptation titled "Everest: The Summit of the Gods" was released in Japan on March 12, 2016. A French-language CG animation film based on the series premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival on July 15, 2021, before its theatrical release in France on September 22, 2021.
