Every time a MC gets almost killed by someone for a "hunch" in one of these stories, they immediately switch to "not a problem, don't worry about it." It's such an unnatural response to literal near murder, it makes me wonder why the author bothered. For like, three pages of tension? Maybe that was a sign you didn't need to put tension there since finding a way to include it was as unnatural as possible?
