In 1945, at the close of the Pacific War, an invasion beset the planet Earth. Droves of Phantom Beasts—aliens from another world—landed and waged war against man. Humanity was forced to unite and fight this common threat, but years later, in present times, the death toll has depleted the military forces, leaving Japan with no choice: They must enlist the help of teenagers. I came to appreciate the magic in this series much more after the anime, it was good after the story fleshed out it little by little, but the anime gave a "punch" that we don't see it everytime.
The concept is "simple" in its contextualization, but the mechanics are deep and there is a lot of space for development and evolution, it can be both "science" and "magic" at its core with ease.
