Gakuen Tengoku is a chaotic blend of stories and characters mostly borrowed from superior manga.
First, there's the "childhood first love reunion" narrative, reminiscent of Love Hina. This storyline is arguably the best and almost works but gets repeatedly sabotaged by other elements. It was the primary reason I stuck with it for as long as I did.
Then comes the "overprotective sister (or in this case, cousin) trying to shield her man from other women," akin to Oniichan Control. In the 33 chapters I read, this subplot remained underdeveloped.
We also have the "student-teacher romance," similar to Sensei; Hirunaka no Ryuusei. If the relationship hadn't escalated sexually so quickly, it might have been more palatable. As it stands, it feels unsettling.
Lastly, we see the clichéd "boy rescues girls on the brink of being raped who then fall for him," a common trope in many Josei smut manga. This part tries to be comedic, which is baffling since rape isn't funny. I can't fathom who thought this was a good idea.
All these elements converge simultaneously around the same protagonist, resulting in a convoluted mess. Much of this content is uncomfortable to read. The main character comes off as a jerk for engaging in sexual activities with various women, including minors, despite supposedly being deeply in love with his childhood sweetheart. Additionally, there's an alliance of male teachers at this all-girls school intent on raping students. The "hero" stops them but doesn't report the crimes, as if statutory rape isn't a serious offense.
Some characters are intriguing, and some plotlines hold interest, making it not the worst borderline-H material I've encountered. However, the overall result falls far short of being a good manga.
This is a spoiler-free review after having read the entire manga.
Story - If you've read Love Hina, you'll find the story of Gakuen Tengoku familiar. Unfortunately, the narrative never really progresses and feels unfinished. There are numerous ridiculous situations that make you wonder, "What's wrong with these people?" and "Does the police exist in this manga?" Nothing particularly exciting occurs, and many aspects remain undeveloped. For instance, the principal, who is the cousin of the main character (MC), has feelings for him, but this part of the story only serves three minor events throughout the manga. The ending is also very poor.
The manga at least has a light atmosphere, which is a plus in my opinion.
Main Character - This MC might be the most useless protagonist ever. Seriously, he's so pathetic it makes you angry. He's weak, dense, clueless, and naive—the only thing going for him is the luck he gets from being the MC. For most of the manga, he doesn't drive the action. He tries to resolve things, but his ideas are usually dumb, and often issues get resolved without much effort on his part.
Overall - This manga had potential, but without a coherent plot and with such nonsensical characters (especially the teachers and the MC), it's hard to call it good. The only redeeming qualities are the art, which is decent, and the cute girls. I wouldn't recommend this manga to anyone because there are far better options available. Time is finite, so I advise seeking something more worthwhile.
tl;dr: A manga that is fairly generic yet still has some amusing aspects, but suffers from significant issues that hinder its overall enjoyment.
This manga is peculiar. It had the potential to be a decent, albeit generic, harem romantic comedy. The basic premise of a teacher trying to remain faithful to his love for another teacher while helping students who have fallen for him fend off their advances is okay. However, the execution leaves much to be desired.
The first major issue is that all the problems he must address stem from other teachers essentially molesting students, which is supposed to be funny. If he managed to stop them before they went too far and they were subsequently jailed, it could be somewhat amusing. Instead, the teachers get away with quite a lot before being stopped, far more than what I find humorous at the very least. And after being stopped, they don't go to jail. They aren't even fired. They simply continue their behavior in different ways. Later, they're even portrayed as good people. I found all of this too distasteful for what is meant to be a comedic manga. Another issue is that the protagonist is quite useless and doesn't really do much in the various situations where he's supposedly stopping the villains and saving the girls, making everything feel rather lame.
Due to these two issues, even though there are plenty of comedic and fluffy parts where the protagonist interacts with the heroines that were amusing and enjoyable, overall the manga wasn't that fun. The ending is also the standard indecisive one, which is typical for manga like this, so I didn't find it particularly disappointing. The art was quite good, though, so I suppose there was some value in reading it for that alone.
Despite there being only around 46 scanlated chapters, I decided to leave a review since none existed. This manga at least deserves that much attention.
Story: 6.5/10
This manga has been quite a roller coaster ride. Initially, it introduces what seems like a childhood friend reunion love story. Then, a potential love triangle or minor harem emerges. A bit later, we encounter some ecchi scenes and sex scenes. Occasionally, conflicts arise for a change of pace, which is mostly what has happened so far. For the first half, the story progression is well-paced, though I can't speak for the latter half. Unfortunately, there were filler chapters that felt like a waste of time, but overall, the flow is pretty solid. The few conflicts that arose were rather predictable and resolved almost too simply, bordering on deus ex machina.
Art: 6.5/10
Considering this manga dates back to 2004-2006, it obviously isn't as refined as today's works. However, it isn't bad either. The school setting is nicely detailed with good background work. It's worth noting that the artwork improved over time. U-Jin definitely honed his/her drawing skills, which shows in the work. Characters are drawn well, though the male and female leads don't always look their age despite being adults among high school kids. The mangaka did a commendable job with a wide variety of characters, each having distinct features that make them unique and distinguishable.
Characters: 6.5/10
It's challenging to delve into character depth without spoiling significant parts of the story, as it forms the core of the manga. Generally, the male lead was indecisive (read: a wuss) but stepped up when his female cast depended on him. The females? To put it nicely, they seemed eager to get close to the MC. U-Jin did well balancing screen time for all characters and didn’t neglect the supporting ones. The cast wasn't unusually stupid or silly, and their reactions and antics felt realistic. As mentioned in the Story section, conflicts were trivial, making the "villains" set up for these conflicts appear pathetically silly and eventually transition into supporting roles. I feel somewhat frustrated by the situations our male lead gets into, though I doubt that was the author’s intention.
Enjoyment/Overall: 6.5/10
Despite the inconsistent storyline and somewhat underwhelming characters, it has been a decent read. The current scanlations left off at an intriguing point in the story, making me want to read further. So, the manga can be quite captivating when it wants to be. As for recommending it to others, yes, it's still good enough for that purpose. The genre tags are accurate, although romance takes more of a backseat. If you're a fan of the genres, you already know what to do.
