I believe the best student-teacher manga are the serious ones where the student genuinely acts their part, and you witness the internal struggles of the teacher. After all, who wants to read about perverted individuals preying on minors? This precisely describes Empty Hearts. Honestly, this manga captured my attention from the very first page thanks to the student character. Takumi LOOKS like a teenager, which is fantastic. Often, I can't take student-teacher yaoi seriously because they depict 16-17-year-old boys as taller, broader, and stronger than a (~)27-year-old man, which just doesn't make sense.
However, in Empty Hearts, not only is the artwork beautiful, but the characters are also believable. Takumi is somewhat scrawny; he's tall but in that skinny, I-just-grew-10-cm-in-a-year kind of way. His face is somewhere between mature and too babyish to be an adult, and his long hair is simply stunning. The authenticity of the characters makes this manga stand out.
