The most despised guy imaginable suddenly transforms into a messiah, making every living being desire him. Great. He can't decide whom to be with first. Not so great. How did he resolve this? In no way whatsoever. The author tried to assist by introducing new characters who also crave his attention and some male figures willing to take his place, but it didn’t pan out.

Apparently, the series aims to find "true love." The issue is that our main character (MC) is already in love with a girl, and when their feelings become mutual, they both flee. The male lead runs away because a girl from his TV wants him more than anyone else, while the female MC escapes as she’s made her choice before and isn’t about to make another one. Pretty cool, huh?

This results in an eternal limbo where people who want each other never actually get together; they just seek replacements. Occasionally, around 10% of the time, these substitutes do end up together, but usually, they run away for various reasons. Often not very quickly, though. The manga is essentially a tease. Characters are ready to go until one says “nah, let’s not,” followed by 20 chapters of regret, crying, and sadness. It was cool the first time. The next 700 times were tedious.

I’d delve deeper, but it repeats the same scenario over and over with different characters, becoming a generic harem where the lead keeps changing. Apparently, this is a profound "life moves on" reference, thought-provoking indeed. This TV-girl occasionally vanishes FOREVER, making the MC sadder, but through epic writing, she always returns. Sometimes with amnesia, sometimes with a greater craving for him. Ironically, she feels more real than any other character. Our MC apparently learns more about real love and his feelings each time she disappears. Such character development. Much symbolism. Wow.

Video Girl Ai was penned by the same mangaka behind I"S. This initially raised numerous red flags, given that I"S was extraordinarily poor. Consequently, I was all the more astonished when Video Girl Ai turned out to be outstanding.

To begin with, it's probably the sole shonen romance I've ever encountered where I genuinely couldn't predict which girl the main character would end up with. In fact, for brief moments, even a "Main Character X Random" pairing seemed plausible.

The storyline itself is somewhat generic, but this can be overlooked because the plot actually progresses. Events unfold, relationships evolve, and these changes endure. "I want to go back" becomes the exception rather than the rule. This progression is crucial in setting Video Girl Ai apart from other mediocre shonen romances. A stagnant romance story is one of the worst offenses, but thankfully, this series never falls into that trap.

The characters are excellently crafted. I found most of them believable as real people (with the exception of Takashi, whose character development remained perplexing). Once their personalities were established, they behaved consistently. This lent genuine impact to some otherwise generic events since you could relate to them as individuals.

I was only truly dissatisfied with the resolution of two characters' arcs. Considering the genre, this level of satisfaction is quite remarkable.

In conclusion, Video Girl Ai exemplifies how shonen romance should be done. If you're a fan of the genre and haven't read this, you're missing out on something special.

Before penning this review, I gave it considerable thought, and it would be quite challenging for me to rate Video Girl Ai lower than a 9. The manga is simply that exceptional. Let me break it down further.

    Story

This aspect might arguably be the weakest in Video Girl Ai. For the initial 20 or so chapters, it's a beautifully crafted tale about finding love in unexpected places and overcoming personal weaknesses for that love. However, as the story progresses, it loses its focus and becomes more episodic, leading up to a well-deserved conclusion. This shift in narrative focus somewhat undermines the finale because, at least for me, it wasn't entirely convincing. Beyond the main story, there's an additional unrelated volume with a second heart-warming and beautiful story.

    Art

This is undoubtedly the most striking feature of the manga. The artwork is breathtaking, with a strong emphasis on character design, especially clothing, which gives off nostalgic 80s-90s vibes. There are numerous close-ups on faces to capture subtle changes in emotions. Coupled with masterful use of lighting, these elements evoke powerful emotions naturally and convincingly.

    Characters

The characters are very human and relatable. The protagonist is a teenager genuinely struggling with puberty and his kind-hearted nature. He’s not a people-pleaser but truly kind-hearted, though this kindness often brings him sadness since he can't give love to everyone. One major issue is that as the story unfolds, it becomes increasingly unclear what the protagonist truly wants from life. Who does he care about the most? He professes love to one girl, yet equally loves another, aligning the narrative and motivations accordingly.

The rest of the cast is equally believable. The girls are sometimes naive but also strong-willed. Interestingly, there's only one antagonist who functions more as a plot device, given his intentions aren’t always clear.

    Enjoyment

I found it hard to put the manga down and often dreamt about it. Honestly, I enjoyed it immensely.

    Overall

Yes, despite my criticisms, it's still a solid 9. Video Girl Ai is definitely worth reading :).

"Video Girl Ai" is an intriguing romantic/sci-fi manga akin to the tale of Pinocchio. It taps into every teenage boy's fantasy: struggling with romance? Finding solace in renting a pornographic video? Imagine if the girl in the video stepped out of the TV to help you find love! That’s exactly what unfolds here. Amidst quirky moments and emotional turmoil, the story weaves through love triangles, magical videotapes (look it up if you must), and explores what it means to be human—whether it's our physical form or genuine feelings that define us. The plot follows a familiar pattern: boy likes girl, girl prefers the boy's best friend, and boy gets assistance from a girl who emerges from a TV screen. None of the main characters are particularly memorable, yet they are all likable with their own flaws. A decent supporting cast complements them. What makes this manga stand out isn't its characters but the journey they undertake. The narrative presents numerous soap opera-like scenarios like "Who will end up with whom?" and "How will this romance conclude?" Yet, when all was said and done, I felt quite happy and satisfied by the ending. The artwork effectively supports the storytelling, emphasizing the story itself. This manga refreshingly revisits some old concepts and offers an enjoyable read. Be warned: there is some sexuality and nudity, but nothing distasteful. If you're in the mood for mildly adult-themed comedic romance drama, give it a read. Cheers!

Video Girl Ai stands out as one of the finest manga I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who appreciates a tale that is tender, fervent, and genuine. This story has brought me to tears more times than I can count, deeply touching me through its characters. Even now, I occasionally revisit certain chapters, as the narrative holds a dear place in my heart.

Especially, the final pages of the manga are something I cherish reading over and over. Without giving anything away, these concluding pages have profoundly influenced my understanding of love. They encapsulate emotions and messages that resonate deeply within me, making this manga an unforgettable experience.
