Shinnosuke Nohara, or Crayon Shinchan, may appear to be an innocent child at first glance. However, anyone who has spent time with kids knows they are far from it. Shinchan is relentless in sassily challenging adults, pulling off naughty pranks, and causing embarrassment to the point of tears. Known as the "kindergartner from hell," this five-year-old boy's antics, including his focus on bodily functions, offensive remarks, and outrageous behavior, consistently irritate those around him. Celebrating the chaotic and hilarious power toddlers wield, Crayon Shinchan became a national sensation in Japan. Initially serialized in Weekly Manga Action, the series moved to the 4-koma manga magazine, Manga Town, in 2000. The author, Yoshito Usui, went missing during a hiking trip on September 11, 2009. His body was found by a climber on Mount Arafune on September 19. Publication of Crayon Shin-chan was initially expected to end in November 2009 but was extended to March 2010 due to newly discovered manuscripts. Crayon Shin-chan has been published in English by several different publishers over the years. It first appeared in the educational publication Mangajin, running occasionally from February 1993 to September 1997 for a total of nine issues. Later, it was published in book format. ComicsOne released the first volume on October 1, 2002, which included changes like name alterations, censorship, and pop-culture references, along with flipping the orientation to a left-to-right format. DC Comics' manga division, CMX, published 11 volumes in their uncensored and un-flipped format from February 1, 2008, to May 4, 2010, although many names and cultural references were still altered. One Peace Books released four volumes in a 3-in-1 omnibus format from October 5, 2012, to November 15, 2013. Only the first 12 volumes of Crayon Shin-chan have been released in English.
