    Slavery was the de facto standard of the human race across practically every culture for tens of thousands of years.  It's not fitting to treat it like obvious moral superiority that we figured out it was bad 200 years ago.  The societal and ideological changes necessary to reach that mode of thought took generation upon generation of cultural and religious development.  Contrary to how it's depicted in simple entertainment media, most people were not mustache-twirling villains who loved being bad for the sake of being bad.
