Girl #21 Yoshimi Yahagi is a rebellious girl with wavy, long hair and is in a relationship with Youji Kuramoto. They met while watching a movie and started dating after running into each other during a shopping trip. Yoshimi is one of the third-year students at the fictional Shiroiwa Junior High School. She was part of Mitsuko Souma's gang, along with Hirono Shimizu. Yoshimi often bullied and stole from her classmates, particularly targeting Kaori Minami. Described as one of the more urban girls in Shiroiwa, she had never seen a sickle before. Yoshimi fell in love with Youji, her boyfriend. Their first intimate encounter occurred on January 18th. Despite her troubled past, which included arrests for theft and blackmail, and dabbling in prostitution introduced by Mitsuko, she stopped such activities once she started dating Youji. In the manga, Mitsuko allowed Yoshimi to be raped by two men for money, using her virginity as leverage. With the earnings, Yoshimi went to see a movie based on her favorite TV show, Alley Cats. During a poignant scene, she noticed Youji crying beside her. Recognizing each other from school, they bonded over their shared interest in the film’s actress, whom Youji admired because she resembled Yoshimi. In both the novel and manga, Yoshimi is thrilled to meet Youji during the game but is shocked when he attacks her. Realizing his inability to kill her due to his love, they are interrupted by Mitsuko, who kills Youji. In the novel, Mitsuko stabs him with a sickle, while in the manga, she shoots him through the head. In the manga, Yoshimi becomes unhinged, trying to reassemble Youji's brains and scolding him for the mess. Enraged, she confronts Mitsuko, who retaliates by shooting her in the eye, intending to use Yoshimi as a human shield. Masayuki Taguchi, the creator of the manga version, did not base Yoshimi on any specific person but listened to many women to capture their unique outlook on life. Koushun Takami, the author of the original Battle Royale novel, appreciated how Taguchi expanded Yoshimi's backstory, describing the manga version of her meeting with Youji as "standing strongly on its own."
