Boy #5 Shougo Kawada, depicted as a loner within the class ranks, is introduced as a transfer student. He joins Class B about two months before the Program begins. Shougo is notable for being the winner of a previous Program held two years earlier.
In all three versions—novel, manga, and film—Shougo is a transfer student. In the novel and manga, he originally attended Kobe Second District Junior High School in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, before transferring to Shiroyama Junior High School's Class 3-B in Kagawa Prefecture a few months before the Program. In the film, he transfers from Kobe Number 5 Junior High School and appears on the Island after the rest of the class has woken up; the film’s class hails from Kanagawa Prefecture instead.
The novel describes Shougo as having "a body built like a middleweight boxer," with very short hair that makes him look like a monk. He also bears scars: a long knife wound scar over his left brow and two round gunshot wound scars on his left shoulder. His past experiences in the Program have made him knowledgeable and organized. Before meeting Shuya Nanahara and Noriko Nakagawa, he raids the town’s supply store and verifies locations marked on the map. He also encounters Shinji Mimura but chooses to ignore him.
Shougo saved Shuya and Noriko early in the first morning by shooting Kyoichi Motobuchi, who had attacked Shuya with a revolver. In the novel and manga, Shougo immediately joins forces with them after this incident, while in the film, they collaborate later. Shougo kills Kaori Minami in the manga and treats Noriko for a fever, helping her and Shuya escape the Island.
During Shuya's absence at the Lighthouse, Shougo looks after Noriko. He is hardened by his experiences and knows when things are likely to turn dire. At the end, he kills Kazuo Kiriyama but is severely wounded in the process. He dies of his injuries on the boat back to the mainland the next day. In the novel and manga, he manages to kill the program instructor (Kinpatsu Sakamochi in the novel, Yonemi Kamon in the manga) by impaling him in the neck with a pencil.
Before the events of the film, manga, and novel, Shougo was not the combat-hardened survivalist he becomes. His personality varies across the three versions. In the novel and manga, he is proficient in first aid due to his father being a doctor and appears intelligent but somewhat unsympathetic. In the film, little is known about his life before the Program, except that he learned skills like cooking and driving a motorboat from his father.
His relationship with Keiko Onuki also differs. In the novel and manga, they were in a relationship, though his unsympathetic nature often upset her. One notable instance involved his lack of pity when a couple had their child taken for stealing money. In the film, it's unclear if they were truly a couple, paralleling Shuya and Noriko's relationship.
In the novel and manga, Shougo did not win by luck. He killed 15 students during the previous Program, which took place in a sectioned-off city project area. He believed he was killing to protect Keiko. In the novel, she died before meeting him, and he stayed at the location of her death for a long time. After killing Kazuo, Shougo lies to Shuya and Noriko, claiming the girl in the photograph is Kyoka Shimazaki, not Keiko, to fool Kinpatsu Sakamochi.
In the manga, Shougo kills another boy, witnessed by Keiko, who is held at gunpoint by another player. Believing Keiko should be with someone who cares for her, Shougo pretends not to care and reveals he plans to shoot himself to let Keiko win. However, Keiko points the gun at him, leading to a tragic misunderstanding where Shougo shoots her dead. As the sole survivor, he is taken from the projects, recovers in a hospital, and returns home to find his father died fighting against soldiers who informed him about Shougo's participation in the Program.
