Boy #15 Shuuya Nanahara is the main protagonist. He has experienced numerous distressing events in his life. His father was killed by the government for opposing the regime, and his mother passed away when he was in third grade. Rejected by his family, Shuuya ended up in an orphanage. He is open to trusting others and does not wish to participate in the Battle Royale program. He makes several attempts to unite his fellow students to escape, but these efforts fail. As a result, he narrowly escapes death at the hands of his classmates multiple times. Shuuya considers himself a "rock star," enjoying and playing rock 'n' roll music, even though it is forbidden. His favorite artist is Bruce Springsteen. After losing his best friend Yoshitoki, Shuuya vows to protect Noriko, who was Yoshitoki's crush.
