Yamato is a member of Konoha's ANBU and a younger peer of Kakashi Hatake. He serves as the temporary leader of Team Kakashi and is one of the main protagonists in the series. "Yamato" is actually a codename assigned to him by Tsunade for joining Team Kakashi. While Kakashi was still in the ANBU, his codename was Tenzou. Occasionally, Kakashi still calls him Tenzou, though Yamato prefers his new codename.
Like other ANBU members, Yamato maintains a calm and stoic demeanor during stressful situations. However, he can also be quite laid back when off duty and uses his Wood Release techniques for comfort, such as creating a house for "camping out."
Yamato is somewhat reluctant to pay for things unless necessary. For instance, he initially protested paying for lunch at Ichiraku Ramen Bar, suggesting that Kakashi, being the senior ninja, should cover the cost. However, he ended up paying when Kakashi said he considered Yamato an equal.
At the start of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Yamato was intercepted by Kabuto while trying to protect Naruto from entering the war. Due to possessing cells from the First Hokage Hashirama Senju, Kabuto used Yamato to enhance the army of White Zetsu. Little is known about his situation afterward.
In chapter 700+7, Yamato is shown to be alive and well, continuing his work for the Hidden Leaf Shinobi forces by keeping an eye on Orochimaru.
