The main protagonist of the story, Yamato, moved from his rural home in Hiroshima to his aunt's dormitory in Tokyo to transform himself. While exploring his new high school, he spots a beautiful high jumper practicing and immediately falls in love. By coincidence, she turns out to be his next-door neighbor, Suzuka Asahina. Yamato is often clumsy and carefree, leading him into awkward situations. However, when necessary, he can become focused and determined. He is notably clueless about girls and their emotions. Despite not excelling academically, he discovers a natural talent for sprinting and joins the track and field team. During his senior year of high school, he becomes a well-liked and respected track captain. After ending his commitment with Saki and realizing his continued love for Asahina, he decides to aim for Seijo University. When he confesses to Suzuka that he wants to restart their relationship, she initially refuses due to fear of getting hurt. Through patience, understanding, and persistence, they reconcile.
