Childhood friend of Kenji and his band, Konchi is a character who prominently features in the 1970s flashbacks but remains secondary as we never see him as an adult. We know he was part of the childhood band and close to Kenji and the others. However, he moved during his final year of primary school to live in Hokkaido, which explains his minimal presence in the story.
In 2000, he received a letter from Kenji asking for help, but Konchi did not meet his childhood friend, a decision he seems to regret by the year 3 Ami. It is in this year that we (re)discover this character, who broadcasts Kenji's song on loop from his position in Hokkaido as a mysterious DJ.
We first learn of his true identity in Volume 21. Since 2015, he has lived alone and appears to embrace a lifestyle reminiscent of the 1970s peace and love movement. This connection stems from a chance encounter with Kenji during his travels across Japan, where he heard the song and decided to share it. However, he did not recognize Kenji during this meeting, which is understandable given they had not seen each other since childhood.
