Friend is the primary antagonist of the series, with his true identity being the central mystery. Friend is a mysterious and charismatic cult leader who appears to have otherworldly powers, including the ability to fly. Both he and his followers use a unique symbol that Kenji and his friends created to represent a 'true friend,' suggesting that Friend is someone within their circle. Despite having enough followers to fill large venues like the Budokan, Friend's ultimate goals remain unclear. In 2000, the cult advances by forming the Friendship Democratic Party (FDP), which gains significant political traction.

During a confrontation at Friend's concert, it is revealed that Friend is the father of Kanna, Kenji's sister's child.

After his death, Friend's identity is disclosed as Fukubei Hattori.

Following Fukubei's death, his secretive accomplice, Katsumata, takes over. He stages a resurrection during a speech by the Pope in front of Fukubei's supposedly deceased body.

Katsumata is later revealed to possess precognitive abilities.
