Kiriko is Kenji's older sister and Kanna's mother. For most of the manga, Kiriko appears only in flashbacks, where she is portrayed as a person with a strong sense of justice and a passion for biology. She played a significant role in Kenji's childhood, often taking him out, giving him gifts, and supporting him during difficult times, such as when he was hospitalized after a motorcycle accident or when she bought him an electric guitar. Fukubei investigated Kiriko's relationship with Moroboshi and, after orchestrating Moroboshi's death, began to court Kiriko using similar tactics. His aim was to motivate her to pursue her dream of studying microbiology and use her knowledge to develop a lethal virus. When Kiriko discovered that Fukubei was building a cult around himself, she provided the police with all the information she had on him and left her daughter, Kanna, in the care of Kenji and their mother. Unfortunately, the detective she gave the evidence to, Yama, had already defected to Fukubei's side, and her evidence was destroyed. Kiriko then approached Yamane and convinced him of Fukubei's true intentions. Realizing the danger posed by the new virus created by Yamane, she dedicated herself to developing a vaccine. Feeling immense guilt over her part in creating the virus, Kiriko has spent much of her time trying to counteract Friend's plans and create a universally distributable vaccine. As a final gamble during Friend Year 3, Kiriko exposed herself to the next generation of the virus to test her own vaccine. Fortunately, the vaccine worked, and Kiriko survived. In "21st Century Boys," Kiriko seems to be working as a volunteer doctor in an African country. Kanna and Chouno visit her there, leading to a long-awaited reunion between mother and daughter.
