Yutaka Watari is a close companion of Tsuzuki, specializing in research and development. Although officially recognized as a mechanical engineer, he embodies the spirit of a scientist, constantly inventing whatever strikes his fancy. Additionally, he oversees computer maintenance and repairs. Watari shares Tsuzuki's cheerful and energetic demeanor but appears to lack the deep-seated turmoil that often plagues Tsuzuki. However, he can abruptly become intensely angry, particularly when something threatens his friends.
Watari is rarely without his faithful owl companion, "003." (Note: 001 is a toucan and 002 is a penguin, both residing in Watari's laboratory.) His ultimate aspiration is to concoct a sex change potion, though his exact motivations remain unclear. He exhibits a peculiar fascination with women and femininity, whether driven by scientific curiosity or sexual interest—an opinion Tatsumi firmly sides with the latter. Watari once expressed a desire to understand the female psyche by experiencing womanhood firsthand. For testing his potions, he often recruits Tsuzuki, exploiting his weakness for sweets.
Watari possesses a unique ability to bring his drawings to life, despite his poor drawing skills. Nevertheless, this talent enabled him to rescue Tsuzuki from the Count's self-written novel in Volume 5. As the shinigami for the sixth sector, Henjoucho, which encompasses Osaka and Kyoto, Watari typically works solo but occasionally collaborates with Tatsumi.
The later volumes of the manga, notably the Kamakura arc, unveil fragments of Watari's past. Most intriguingly, it is revealed that Watari was once employed by the Five Generals, notorious for their role in the Mother Project, a supercomputer central to Meifu.
