Hisoka is a Shinigami in the body of a 16-year-old. He possesses strong empathy, enabling him to feel others' emotions, read their thoughts, see memories, and sense imprints of clairvoyance on inanimate objects.
He hails from a traditional family and was trained in classical Japanese martial arts. His parents feared his spiritual abilities, viewing them as freakish and unsuitable for their heir, potentially exposing a hidden secret. Consequently, whenever he was caught using his powers or during special occasions, they locked him in a cellar.
One spring night at age 13, unable to sleep, he wandered under the sakura trees and stumbled upon a murder in progress. The murderer, Muraki Kazutaka, captured him, raped him, and cursed him to a slow death that drained his life over three years, believing "a beautiful boy deserves a beautiful death." Muraki later told Tsuzuki that he chose this prolonged torment over immediate murder, achieved through an incurable curse. Red marks and symbols, visible only when Muraki is near or active, still cover Hisoka's body. It is implied these will disappear only after Muraki's actual death. After Hisoka died, he became a Shinigami to investigate his own demise, having no memory of it. Later, it emerged that Muraki had sealed Hisoka's memories to hide his crimes.
In Meifu, Hisoka was partnered with Tsuzuki. He enjoys reading and spends much time alone in the library. Even in the afterlife, his health remains poor; he tends to faint due to heat, lack of sleep, or alcohol consumption. Physically weak, he struggles to build muscle. However, he is a capable detective and adept at subterfuge.
Though extremely reserved and seemingly cold, Hisoka deeply cares for others. When Tsuzuki's suicidal tendencies resurfaced, Hisoka comforted him, saving him from himself. Despite Tsuzuki sometimes driving him mad, Hisoka feels compelled to take care of him. He maintains comfortable relationships with coworkers, except Saya and Yuma, who constantly try to play with him like a doll.
Besides empathy, Chief Konoe trained Hisoka in basic ofuda and defensive magic. Later, he sought a Shikigami to enhance his power. His first Shikigami, Riko, is a Spanish-speaking potted cactus, a defensive and water-type Shiki. Hisoka excels in traditional martial arts, particularly archery and kendo.
