vergil

Vergil is Dante's twin brother and serves as the primary antagonist in Devil May Cry 3 (2005).

After being betrayed by Arkham, he temporarily joins forces with Dante towards the end of the game before resuming his role as the villain. Throughout the game, Vergil aims to break the seal of Sparda inside the Temen-ni-gru and claim their father's full power for himself, regardless of the consequences this might have on the human world. To achieve this, he needs Dante's half of their mother's amulet, prompting him to lure Dante out with the intention of forcefully taking it. Vergil confronts Dante three times during the storyline of Devil May Cry 3.

Their first battle takes place on the highest level of Temen-ni-gru, where Dante is decisively defeated by Vergil, who then takes Dante's amulet. The second battle occurs at the very bottom of the tower, where they fight to a stalemate before being interrupted. Their final confrontation happens near the entrance to the demon realm, where Vergil is ultimately defeated. Although Vergil survives his encounter with Mundus, he becomes enslaved and appears to lose all memories of his past life. In the first Devil May Cry game, he appears as a demonic dark knight named Nelo Angelo. Dante encounters Nelo Angelo three times, and each time, upon seeing Dante's half of the amulet, Nelo Angelo retreats. In their last encounter, Nelo Angelo reveals his face, showing that he is indeed Vergil. He seemingly explodes in their final battle, leaving behind his half of the amulet.

Vergil is incredibly powerful and dangerous. Like Dante, he possesses superhuman strength, agility, and stamina, along with the ability to activate his Devil Trigger. Due to his greater knowledge and experience with his demonic powers, he can perform advanced teleportation. Considering firearms unworthy weapons, he manifests Summoned Swords for long-range attacks. After being corrupted by Mundus and becoming Nelo Angelo, Vergil gains new enhancements to his powers, although his techniques appear to lose some variety.

In terms of melee combat, Vergil employs a real-life sword style called Iaido with the Yamato, which involves attacks using both the sword and its sheath. As depicted in DMC3, Vergil demonstrates exceptional proficiency with the Yamato, striking so swiftly that opponents do not realize they have been defeated until he sheaths his weapon. His swordsmanship surpasses Dante's, with his strikes too fast for the human eye to follow. Additionally, he was able to awaken his Devil Trigger before his brother.
