Sparda, a demon who rebelled against his own kind for the sake of humanity two thousand years before the events of Devil May Cry, defeated countless demons and their Emperor, Mundus. He sealed the gateway to the demon world, sacrificing both his blood and that of a mortal priestess. His actions made him a legend in the human world, earning him the title of The Legendary Dark Knight Sparda, though they also earned him a notorious reputation among demons, many of whom he had defeated during his rebellion.
After his death, most of Sparda's power was hidden in the demon realm, sealed within his sword, the Sparda or Force Edge. Access to this power required an amulet he had taken with him to the human world. This amulet could be split into two parts and was one of the keys needed to unlock the portal. All its abilities would be deactivated if the halves were separated. Near the end of his life, Sparda settled down with a human wife, Eva, and fathered twin sons, Dante and Vergil. He gave his amulet to Eva as a gift, which she later divided and passed on to her sons.
Both Vergil and Dante received powerful, enchanted swords from their father: Rebellion for Dante and Yamato for Vergil.
