Varaharu, also known as "The Monster" in the Saiyuuki Reload Gunlock anime, is the youkai that has been possessing Hazel for half of his life. Unaware of his own possession, Hazel derives his ability to move and exchange souls from this youkai. In the anime, Varaharu's name is never revealed; he is simply referred to as "The Monster." His origin story is quite different as well. Varaharu is a youkai that Hazel encountered during his childhood when it was chasing him with the intent to kill. Since Hazel hated monsters because they had killed his parents, the monster cursed him by entering his body. His master, Filbert Grouse, asked if he was okay even while witnessing his transformation into a monster. The berserk Hazel ended up killing his own master. In his final moments, Filbert told Hazel that he needed to let go of his hatred and find someone who would understand him. When Hazel first met Gat, Varaharu took control, causing Hazel to transform into a monster due to the previous possession. Gat ended up killing Hazel because of this transformation. As Gat closed Hazel’s eyes, he saw Hazel’s sad memories and requested the spirit to give its soul to Hazel in an attempt to revive him. After Hazel was revived, his past memories and the monster were sealed away by the spirit. This seal would remain intact as long as the spirit was alive.
