Despite his calm and pleasant demeanor, Hakkai is a formidable demon. He can channel his chi into powerful bursts of energy during battles and form protective shields for himself and his companions. His three ear cuffs act as limiters; when removed, they unleash his true power, allowing him to defeat larger or multiple foes. However, he is often reluctant to do so due to the potential danger to his friends.
Hakkai takes on a nurturing role within the group traveling with Sanzou, handling tasks such as cleaning, shopping, and caring for the others. The jeep they travel in is actually his small magical dragon companion, Hakuryu.
Before joining the journey west, Hakkai was known as Cho Gonou, a human orphan who married his older sister, Cho Kanan. Working as a teacher in their village, Gonou returned home one day to find that townspeople had sacrificed Kanan to the centipede demon Hyakuganmaou. Enraged, Gonou killed many townsfolk before storming the demon's castle and slaying every demon inside. Upon finding Kanan imprisoned, she revealed she was pregnant by the demon king and chose to end her life with Gonou’s blade.
Devastated, Gonou was attacked by Chin Yisou, Hyakuganmaou's remaining son, who cut open his belly. Curious about a rumor, Yisou dripped his blood into Gonou’s wound, turning him into a demon after he had slain 1,000 demons. Wounded, Gonou was saved physically by half-demon Sha Gojou and spiritually by Genjo Sanzou, taking the new name Cho Hakkai as a symbol of his rebirth. He and Gojou became close friends through their shared experiences.
In his previous life, Hakkai was Field Marshal Tenpou, a god in Heaven known for his love of books and mild temperament. He was close friends with Konzen Douji and General Kenren, forming an inseparable bond despite their rank differences. Though generally mild-mannered, Tenpou fiercely defended those he cared about when provoked, qualities he carried into his next life. His weapon of choice was the katana.
