Tsukushi Makino is the central female protagonist, one of the rare students at the prestigious Eitoku University who hails from a financially struggling family. Her household is so impoverished that paying her tuition fees is a significant challenge, yet her parents encourage her to continue her education, hoping she might marry into wealth and lift them out of poverty.
At the start of the manga, Makino was an impoverished girl with pigtails, possessing hardly any friends at school and mostly keeping to herself. When one of her few friends accidentally tumbles down a staircase and collides with the leader of the F4, Makino bravely defends her friend (Domyoji was about to punish her for bumping into him) and consequently faces severe repercussions.
The following day, a red tag appears in her locker, signaling impending harassment from the F4 and their followers. However, unlike most of the F4's targets, Makino stands firm and fights back, demonstrating the resilience of a "weed".
Through this ordeal, she evolves, allowing her tenacious and diligent nature to shine through. Ultimately, she transforms all the F4 members into her allies.
Initially, Makino despises all the F4 members except Hanazawa Rui, towards whom she harbors romantic feelings. But as Rui pursues Shizuka, Makino gradually gets acquainted with the others, slowly developing affection for the hot-tempered leader, Domyoji.
