Touji is a tough guy, fitting the stereotype of a "jock," and constantly clashes with Asuka. His younger sister was hurt during the battle between the third Angel, Sachiel, and Unit 01, leading Touji to physically confront Shinji, whom he holds indirectly responsible. However, after observing Shinji's pain firsthand while piloting Unit 01 in the fight against Shamshel, Touji starts to respect Shinji, and they eventually become friends.
Touji is named after one of the main characters in Ryuu Murakami's novel Ai to Gensou no Fascism (The Fascism of Love and Fantasy).
Touji Suzuhara is designated as the Fourth Child. His Eva, Unit 03, becomes possessed by the thirteenth Angel, Bardiel, and is ultimately destroyed by Unit 01, which was operating under the Dummy Plug system. Touji suffers severe injuries when his Entry Plug is crushed; in the manga version, he dies.
