Asuka is the Second Child ('Second Children' in the Japanese versions of NGE), piloting Evangelion Unit 02. She hails from Germany but has an American father and a half-German, half-Japanese mother. In the Rebuild of Evangelion series of movies, her name changes to Asuka Langley Shikinami.

Her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Souryuu, went insane following an Eva-related experiment and started believing that a doll resembling Asuka was actually her daughter, refusing to acknowledge the real Asuka. On the day Asuka was chosen to become an Eva pilot, Kyoko committed suicide. That day, Asuka vowed never to cry again. This event instilled a deep hatred for dolls and anything she perceives as doll-like, especially Rei. Despite these feelings, Asuka shows no hesitation when required to cooperate with Rei, proving her commitment and professionalism as an Eva pilot.
Asuka's father later remarried, but Asuka feels no affection towards his new wife. She often lashes out verbally and sometimes physically at those around her, except for her unrequited crush, Kaji, who is Misato's ex-boyfriend and more than twice Asuka's age. On better days, however, she can be quite cheerful and friendly.
Like Shinji, Asuka struggles with closeness to others. Unlike Shinji, who withdraws into himself, Asuka copes through over-aggressiveness, unintentionally hurting those she likes and pushing them away, thus sinking further into loneliness and self-loathing. This issue is referred to as the "hedgehog's dilemma" and recurs throughout the story.
