Kensuke Aida is a self-proclaimed otaku and military enthusiast. He is also Toji's best friend and one of the "Other Children," potential Eva pilots who share classes with Shinji, Toji, Rei, Asuka, and Hikari. His interests include camping in the mountains around Tokyo-3 and engaging in solo war simulation games. After Shinji rescues him and Toji during the battle against the fourth Angel, Shamshel, Kensuke's bond with Shinji strengthens. He harbors a dream of becoming an Eva pilot and persistently pleads with Shinji to use his influence at NERV to get selected, even though Shinji clarifies he has no such power. Unaware of the extreme physical and mental strain experienced by Eva pilots, Kensuke remains enthusiastic. Still, he relishes the perks that come with being friends with an Eva pilot; both he and Toji join Shinji on the trip to the UN combined naval fleet when Unit 02 is transported. Like many of Shinji's classmates, Kensuke's mother has passed away. He shares Toji's admiration for Misato Katsuragi and is rarely seen without his camcorder.
Kensuke's name originates from a main character in Ryu Murakami's novel "The Fascism of Love and Fantasies" (Ai to Gensou no Fascism). Additionally, his appearance resembles Jean, a character from Hideaki Anno's previous anime "Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water."
