Takuto is a shinigami, also known as a Death God, partnered with another shinigami named Meroko. They are tasked with collecting Mitsuki's soul. His shinigami outfit resembles a cat costume with a backpack that has wings, which allows him to fly since he hasn't fully transformed into a shinigami and doesn't have his own wings yet. He can also transform into an anthropomorphic cat plushie. Takuto uses his powers to transform Mitsuki into a 16-year-old so she can participate in a singing audition.
As the story progresses, Takuto regains memories of his past life involving Mitsuki, though this was forbidden for him to do. This leads to complications, especially affecting his feelings for Mitsuki. In a previous life, Takuto was a singer in Mitsuki’s father’s band and had met Mitsuki when she was a child. He even played a role in naming her, as depicted in the manga.
When Takuto was around 16 years old, he suffered from the same throat tumor that Mitsuki now has. After undergoing surgery, he lost his ability to sing and, unable to imagine a life without music, he took his own life. In the manga, he jumps from the hospital ceiling, while in the anime, he drives a motorcycle off a cliff. However, instead of dying, he falls into a coma, which explains why he is not a full shinigami.
