Girl #13 Takako Chigusa is a character in the novel "Battle Royale," as well as its film and manga adaptations. In the English-language manga, she is nicknamed Taka. Chigusa has B-type blood.
Takako is part of the third-year class at the fictional Shiroiwa Junior High School in the fictional town of Shiroiwa. The novel and manga place the town in Kagawa Prefecture, while the film sets it in Kanagawa Prefecture. She was the top sprinter on the girls' track team, with her 200-meter sprint record being the second-best in the school's history. Many students, including Shinji Mimura, considered her the second prettiest girl in the class, with Mitsuko Souma being the first. Mimura even described Takako as a "grade-A babe."
In the novel, Takako has orange streaks in her hair (the manga mentions streaked hair but does not specify colors), earrings (two in her left ear and one in her right), designer rings on her left middle and ring fingers, five bracelets, and a pendant made from a foreign coin. She kept long fingernails, which annoyed her coach, Mr. Tada. Despite her unconventional hairstyles and excessive jewelry, Takako's athletic abilities and good grades allowed her to avoid punishment. She resented having to dress unattractively for school and was quite vain. She had a younger sister named Ayako and a pet dog named Hanako.
Her best friend was Kahoru Kitazawa, a girl from another class whom she had known for seven years. Her closest friend in her own class was Hiroki Sugimura, whom she trusted implicitly since primary school. She was in love with Hiroki but did not immediately realize it. She also had a crush on an unnamed older person. When rumors circulated that she was dating Kazushi Niida, Takako was displeased and angry that Niida did nothing to stop them. When angered, she would often break into a grin.
In the manga, Niida reveals that due to her cold demeanor and loner attitude, classmates referred to her as "robo-bitch." During the Program, he frequently called her by this nickname.
During The Program
When the Program begins, Niida approaches Takako in both the novel and manga. He tries to force her to team up with him, threatening to kill her if she refuses. When she laughs at him, he threatens to rape her. They engage in a prolonged fight, during which Takako is injured in the leg after Niida shoots her with an arrow from his bowgun. In the manga, she is also punched several times, kneecapped, and stabbed in the shoulder.
In the manga, Takako stabs Niida in the eye with her finger and stomps on his testicles while he lies on the ground, leaving him with one eye and one testicle. She then asks him, "How much more do you want to gamble?" He responds that it is too late to walk away and turns to attack her again. She trips him and impales him through the mouth with an arrow.
In the novel, as she retrieves an ice pick, Takako notices Mitsuko Souma nearby. After a brief conversation, Takako tries to run away; Mitsuko shoots her three times in the back and leaves, believing Takako to be dead.
In the manga, after kicking Niida away, Takako sinks to her knees and thinks about Hiroki. Mitsuko approaches from behind and shoots her in the back. Takako manages to glimpse Mitsuko walking casually away.
Takako survives for another half hour before Hiroki finds her. She warns him about Mitsuko and tells him she thinks he is really cool. Hiroki responds by saying she is the coolest girl in the world. After bidding farewell to her family and Hiroki in her heart, she dies a few minutes later in his arms.
In the novel, her final thought is "Dear God, may I have one more word?" She then says, "You've become quite a stud," to Hiroki. Hiroki replies, "And... you're the most stylin' girl in the world." Takako loses her voice before she can say "Thank you." After thanking Hiroki in her heart, she dies.
In the film, Takako's final thought is phrased as "God, can I just tell him one more thing?" She says, "You are really cool, Hiroki." Hiroki responds, "You are the coolest girl in the world." Takako replies with "Thank you" just before she dies.
