hong suyong

Name in Hangul: 홍 수영 A Korean Go professional, two years younger than Hikaru. He first appeared in the manga at the age of 12. During the month leading up to the pro exam, Hikaru, Waya, and Isumi traveled to various go salons to hone their skills. In one of these salons, they met Suyong, whose uncle runs a go salon, while Suyong was on vacation from Korea. At that time, Suyong was a top-tier Kenkyuusei (the Korean equivalent of an insei), but he was disheartened by his recent consecutive losses and subsequent drop in rank. A heated exchange between him and Hikaru led to an incredible match at the go salon. Although Suyong lost, the game had a cathartic effect on him. As he carved Hikaru's name into his mind, Suyong swore to become a pro and play Hikaru again. As a pro, Suyong soon emerged as one of Korea's most prominent young talents after defeating a 9-dan player. He also befriended Ko Yeong-ha, Korea's top young pro, and frequently visited his place. Suyong appeared again in the manga as the third representative for Korea in the Hokuto Cup, following his victories in the Myungjin Cup preliminaries. During the opening ceremony preceding the Hokuto Cup, he was the first to catch wind of Hikaru's misunderstanding with Ko Yeong-ha's statements about Shuusaku and urged Yeong-ha to clarify the matter, which turned out to be a simple translation error. However, an amused Yeong-ha refused to let Suyong explain this to Hikaru and instead publicly readdressed his statements (this time adding that Shuusaku would not hold a candle to Yeong-ha himself) before Suyong could inform Hikaru of the truth. This sparked Hikaru's resentment towards Yeong-ha and his determination to play him as the 1st seat, leading to a private argument between Yeong-ha and Suyong. In the Hokuto Cup, as the 3rd seat of Korea, Suyong faced Zhao Shi of China and Yashiro Kiyoharu of Japan, winning both his games and bringing victory to Korea. (Source: Wikipedia)
