Okita is the top swordsman in the Shinsengumi. He has a light-hearted and somewhat childish personality, though his speech tends to be deadpan.
He shows outward annoyance and dislike towards Hijikata and frequently attempts to harm or humiliate him whenever possible.
Having lost his parents at a young age, Okita was raised by his sister, Mitsuba. Despite being sadistic and violent towards others, he adores his sister and does everything to please her. His affection for Mitsuba is one reason why he dislikes Hijikata, whom he saw as a rival for her attention. He also resents how coldly Hijikata treated Mitsuba, even though she clearly liked him.
Okita holds great fondness for Kondo, who took him under his wing when he was young. He still considers Hijikata one of his three friends, along with Kondo and Gintoki.
He enjoys watching women fight, finding their expressions during fights hilarious. Okita often naps on duty, wearing a distinctive eye mask. At one point, he claims to be the best sniper in the Shinsengumi, although he is more skilled with kenjutsu but prefers using a bazooka.
After an unfinished rock-paper-scissors duel during a cherry blossom party, Okita regards Kagura as a rival, stating that he will "be the only one to defeat her," and usually calls her "China."
In the original Japanese manga, he likes to end his sentences with "~desaa" and "~desuzee."
In Sorachi's initial character design, Okita was female and wielded an umbrella. This concept was later used for Kagura.
In the second Shounen JUMP character popularity poll, he ranked second, just below Gintoki.
In volume 12, Okita’s age is revealed to be 18. Although under Japan's legal drinking age, in Edo, one can drink alcohol from the age of 15.
His name is based on the historical figure Okita Souji.
