Gintoki is a samurai living in an era where samurai are obsolete. To make matters worse, oppressive aliens have invaded Earth. He takes on odd jobs with two young companions: Kagura and Shinpachi. During the Joui war, he earned the nickname "White Devil" due to his silver hair and white battle attire, which, combined with his exceptional swordsmanship, made him renowned among comrades and feared by the Amanto.
Gintoki has naturally permed silver hair, which he jokingly blames for his lack of romantic success. He harbors a crush on Ketsuno, the TV news weather girl. The only times he's been seen blushing were when trying to use Sadaharu and Ketsuno's dog to talk to her, and later when Tsukuyo catches him shopping. Despite several female characters showing interest in Gintoki, he typically ignores them or treats their advances as annoyances.
Gintoki has two major obsessions: sweet foods like parfaits, ice cream, and cakes, and reading Weekly Shounen Jump. His passion for Jump leads him to go to great lengths to get the latest issue, sometimes engaging in reckless behavior. This obsession also makes him dream of being like other Jump heroes, even wishing he had a "Bankai" like the characters from Bleach.
Despite his outward appearance and initial behavior, Gintoki holds great pride in the old bushido code. He often takes it upon himself to rescue or avenge not only his friends but also people he barely knows, such as a pit-fighter caring for abandoned orphans or an Amanto resembling a kappa.
Though a formidable fighter with nearly unmatched skills, Gintoki avoids unnecessary bloodshed after losing most of his friends and allies during the Joui war.
