shishou

Shishou is Kino's mentor who taught her the art of marksmanship. She resides in a forest and does not travel. Her real name remains unknown; "Shishou" is a title meaning "mentor" or "master," although Kino initially does not understand this. In the final episode of the anime, which is set before most other episodes chronologically, the gunsmith who crafted The Cannon mentioned to Kino that he gave the gun to a young woman who insisted everyone call her "Shishou." She used to travel between countries, causing disturbances wherever she went, indicating that Shishou was once a traveler. In the novels, several stories focus on her travels with a man referred to as her "student" when she was in her late twenties.
