It is revealed in episode 4 of the anime and the final chapter of volume 1 of the light novel series that Kino is, in fact, a girl. She adopted the name "Kino" in honor of a traveler who saved her as a child and inspired her current lifestyle. Her real birth name is never explicitly stated in either the show or the light novels, but there are hints in the anime suggesting it might be "Sakura."
