Shinobu Sensui was Earth's Spirit Detective before Yusuke Urameshi. According to Koenma, he was the perfect candidate due to his exceptional spirit awareness, strength, and strong moral compass.
Sensui had a clear-cut sense of right and wrong. Humans were victims who needed protection, while demons were evil and had to be eliminated. This belief changed when he encountered Itsuki, a demon who asked for one more day to live so he could watch the finale of his favorite TV show. Sensui found this request oddly human and spared Itsuki. Through his interactions with Itsuki, Sensui began to realize that not all demons were evil.
However, his true turning point came during a mission to seal a tunnel connecting the Demon World and Human World. The tunnel was maintained by the Black Book Club, including Sakyo, to lure and sell demons as bodyguards. Sensui caught the club off guard but witnessed something horrifying: humans torturing demons in a ritual known as the Feast of Human Vices. This act of cruelty, committed purely for twisted enjoyment, shattered Sensui's black-and-white view of humans and demons.
Unable to cope with this revelation and his own past actions, Sensui descended into madness. In a fit of rage, he killed everyone present and began questioning humanity's worth. He became obsessed with a video tape called Chapter Black, which documented the worst atrocities committed by humans against each other and demons.
Sensui decided to punish humanity by opening a stable tunnel to the Demon World, continuing Sakyo's plan from the Black Book Club. He waited ten years for Koenma to recruit a new Spirit Detective, giving humanity an "attorney" for their upcoming "trial." With his partner Itsuki and other psychically gifted humans, he aimed to purge the world of what he saw as the human scourge.
Yusuke and his companions initially thought Sensui's "seven" referred to the seven humans he recruited. However, it was revealed that Sensui's "seven" actually referred to his seven distinct personalities. One of these personalities claimed they would be the ones to wipe out the human race.
