Botan serves as the guide for the deceased across the Sanzu River, often compared to the River Styx. Unlike traditional shinigami or death gods, Botan stands out with her vibrant pink kimono and blue hair tied in a ponytail. Her cheerful and occasionally sarcastic demeanor makes her an atypical embodiment of Death, a point quickly noted by Yusuke Urameshi upon their first meeting. Initially tasked with helping Yusuke transition to the Spirit World, or Reikai, Botan evolves into a guardian angel figure, aiding Yusuke in his quest to return to his body and later acting as the liaison between Yusuke, his friends, and Koenma in Reikai. She is dedicated, caring deeply for others and often concealing her own struggles.
Though not a fighter like those around her, Botan has engaged in combat several times, usually to protect Keiko Yukimura. While she lacks powers such as Yusuke's Rei Gun or Kuwabara's Spirit Sword, she possesses heightened spirit awareness and spiritual energy, allowing her to use detective tools that require spirit energy. When fighting, Botan prefers blunt instruments like her oar, a metal bat, or even her fists. In human form, she can utilize any of Yusuke's detective items. For instance, during the episode "Setting the Trap," she planned to use the Concentration Ring to blow up walls, hinting at potential undisclosed spirit powers. In the human world, Botan often resorts to using human weapons or whatever heavy objects are available. Additionally, she has healing abilities capable of halting or pausing demonic transformations.
