Kuwabara, as most people call him, is the second toughest kid at Sarayashiki Junior High School and constantly strives to take Yusuke Urameshi's place as the toughest. In the manga (chapter 1), he mentions that he never lost a fight until he met Yusuke. He leads a gang consisting of himself, Kirishima, Okubo, and Sawamura (referred to as Komada in the English dub). Kuwabara has a soft spot for kittens, including his own cat Eikichi, and adheres to a strict code of honor. When he first meets Botan, he develops a minor crush on her, but later falls deeply for the ice apparition Yukina, unaware that she is Hiei's sister. Kuwabara has an older sister named Shizuru Kuwabara, who is tough and protective. She and Yukina are the only characters known to call him by his given name. In the anime, Kazuma and Shizuru's parents never appear and are rarely mentioned. His father briefly appears in the final volume of the manga to announce that Yukina will be living with them and seems aware of the Reikai. As the series progresses, Kuwabara's relationship with Yusuke evolves from rivals to best friends, although they still frequently disagree. Kuwabara and Kurama have a cordial relationship, but Kuwabara shares no love for Hiei, and both openly express their dislike for each other, though deep down they are friends. Kuwabara's most unique ability is his sensitivity to Reiki, or Spirit Awareness, which he and his friends refer to as "the Tickle." This ability allows him to sense ghosts and paranormal entities, see spirits and demons, and predict others' motives. Kuwabara can also create a blade made of his spirit energy, known as the Rei Ken or Spirit Sword. Initially needing a piece of wood to manifest it, he eventually learns to create the sword without any physical aid after a month of practice (six months in the English dub). During training, his sword can extend and retract at will, and he can even wield two swords simultaneously. Unlike his teammates, Kuwabara can be reckless but is fiercely loyal to his friends and follows a strict code of honor. He would do anything for his friends and for love, and can be quite cunning in battle when necessary. He is widely considered the nicest among the four. Genkai reveals that Kuwabara's spirit awareness is so high that his body was aware of Sensui's plan months before it happened, prompting a transformation to prepare for it. While preparing for the finals of the Dark Tournament, he creates a massive prismatic blade made of pure Spirit Energy, generating a unique, almost-electrical aura around his body, enhancing both his offense and defense. This is known as the Tameshi No Ken or The Trial Sword. During his fight against Kiyoshi Mitarai (aka Sea Man), a human teenager capable of creating indestructible water monsters, Kuwabara temporarily loses access to his powers. Faced with the potential death of his friends, his powers awaken, granting him the ability to slice through dimensional barriers with a new type of energy sword called the Jigen Tou or Dimensional Blade.
