Shino Nanao is one of the few individuals close to Ovan and takes on the role of leader for the Twilight Brigade whenever Ovan is unavailable. Despite her gentle demeanor, she possesses a strong will that helps keep the guild united during Ovan's frequent absences. There seems to be a deeper connection between Shino and Ovan beyond just being guildmates, as they have met outside the game on several occasions, including Shino's hospital visits.

In episode 13 of .hack//Roots, Shino is attacked by Tri-Edge, leading to Azure Kite being framed. This results in her in-game character being seemingly erased and her real self falling into a coma. Living alone at the time, her landlord found her unconscious. Doctors are unable to treat her due to the unknown cause of her coma. Those who suffer similar fates are known as Lost Ones, as it is rumored that once a player is PKed by Tri-Edge, they can never return to the game. In real life, Shino is 20 years old and studying medicine.
