In .hack//Roots, Haseo is a new player to the online game known as The World. He is an outcast in real life and struggles with social interactions. Upon logging into The World R:2, Haseo is attacked by PKs (Player Killers) and is rescued by Ovan, the Guild Master of the Twilight Brigade.
Haseo joins the Twilight Brigade to learn more about Ovan. After Ovan disappears for an extended period, the Twilight Brigade disbands, and Shino is PKed by Tri-Edge. Obsessed with saving Shino, Haseo relentlessly seeks power, leading him to journey into the Forest of Pain, a new Lost Ground. There, after confronting another AI named Harald, his PC body undergoes a transformation.
At level 133 and equipped with powerful weapons, Haseo becomes known as the Terror of Death, a PKK or Player Killer Killer. He hunts down PKs, demanding information on Tri-Edge. If they fail to provide useful information, which is usually the case, he eliminates them. Players gave him this title because he genuinely cared only for Shino.
Around this time, Ovan returns and informs Haseo that Tri-Edge will reappear soon at the Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground. Haseo tries to defeat Tri-Edge but is Data-Drained, returning later as a level 1 character with no items or contact info.
(AIDA: A bug in The World R:2 that alters or corrupts players' data upon contact. In severe cases, it can cause players to fall into a coma.)
(Epitaph Users: A select few with Avatars used to fight against Tri-Edge, AIDA, and other threats.)
(Avatar: One of eight creatures first seen in the original .hack where Kite and his friends defeated them all. Now, Epitaph Users use Avatars to 'delete' AIDA or remove them from infected players. Avatars use a special move called Data Drain, which causes non-Avatar or non-AIDA-infected players to fall into a coma.)
Though it is never officially confirmed whether they are the same person, Haseo shares the same real name and is close in age to the player of Sora from .hack//sign. Additionally, both characters have a connection to Skeith.
