Shinichi is the main character of the manga, a thoughtful and compassionate high school student whose hand becomes infected by a Parasite. Throughout the story, Shinichi faces numerous challenges. He must learn to coexist peacefully with Migi, the Parasite that has taken over his hand, while also balancing his desire to protect humanity from other Parasites and keeping his own Parasite a secret to avoid being killed or used for experiments. Like a superhero with a hidden identity, he must find ways to explain his Parasite-fighting activities and the emotional toll they take on him to his friends and family.
Because Shinichi retains his human mind, emotions, and sensibilities, other Parasites view him as a threat. Together with Migi, he must defend himself against attacks from other Parasites. Their ability to think and act independently, as well as their teamwork, gives them a strategic advantage over normal Parasites.
