Once a psychology graduate student, he transformed into a "genius swindler" driven by the desire to dismantle a massive MLM scam called Shuuei, as retribution for his mother. He comes to Nao's aid, recognizing her honesty reminiscent of his mother's. Despite not being originally part of the Liar Game, he joins by substituting for another player in Round II. By Round III, he garners enough respect and fear from the LGT players to become the unofficial leader of the Southern Country, although he strives to maintain equality within the group. However, Yokoya is aware of Akiyama's manipulation of his teammates and ridicules him for it.
