Tokugawa Shige Shige, the Seii taishōgun of Japan, held a diminished role in controlling the country due to the death of his father and the Amanto invasion. He looked up to Police Chief Matsudaira as a father figure.
He appeared in several episodes being led around by Matsudaira to various places like cabaret clubs, where he met Gintoki and the Yorozuya crew. He often found himself harassed by Otae and her friends.
In chapter 524 of the manga and episode 307 of the anime (Gintama° Episode 42), he is injected with a poisonous needle by his childhood friend Tomonosuke. He later dies peacefully on the lap of his sister, Soyo.
