Upon introduction, he became a hikikomori a week after getting into trouble with a gang. Adachi and Shinigawa, unaware they were the cause of his self-isolation, beat the gang, which helped him overcome his fears. When they forget about him, he feels shattered again. Adachi tries to encourage him to attend school and take exams, but he refuses, expressing fear of sitting next to Shinagawa. However, Shinagawa realizes Chiba is seeking Adachi's attention and tells him she won't visit him again if he doesn't attend school and take the exams. Chiba is very intelligent and wealthy, with a young and beautiful mother. He has a habit of unknowingly glaring at people, leading to misunderstandings. He excels academically, almost always scoring 100 marks on tests, except once in chapter 67, where he scored 94 on a math test, two marks lower than Shinagawa.
