The former "guardian" of Hekikuu High, he spent most of his high school years as a servant to the previous guardian. Expecting to enjoy his final year as the guardian, he was quickly forced to resign after meeting Kitano. Among the group, he is the most delinquent-like, often skipping classes to smoke and start fights. Despite frequently getting beaten up by others, including Koiso Ryoko, Takehisa, and other delinquents, he isn't physically weak—he's large and has a powerful punch. His constant defeats stem from his psyche; he scares easily and tends to panic. Additionally, his simple-mindedness makes him easy to manipulate.
Kuroda desperately clings to remnants of his dignity by acting like a guardian in front of Ogisu and his seniors. He also harbors an unreciprocated crush on Ryoko. Ooshita and Tokiyama are his two lackeys/friends, rarely referred to by their real names. Koide, the class president’s assistant, calls it a "miracle" that he managed to learn their full names. As the story unfolds, they come to recognize Kuroda’s weaknesses (and occasionally his strengths), yet remain loyal to him.
Interestingly, according to the author, Kuroda plays a pivotal role at the beginning of the series, created during a period of writer's block.
