Yamazaki is a spy with a specialty in intelligence gathering. He is frequently spotted by Hijikata playing badminton alone and subsequently gets beaten up. Often, he dresses up as a badminton-playing version of Echizen Ryoma from The Prince of Tennis. In episode 62, he was heard saying "Mada mada dane," which is Ryoma Echizen's catchphrase.
His role as a ninja is loosely inspired by Yamazaki Susumu, but it is rarely showcased, except for one failed attempt to spy on Gintoki. Despite his rivalry with Shinpachi, they often find common ground when their respective groups are involved.
Although he has limited screen time, he ranked 9th in the Gintama character popularity poll. However, even with his popularity, Sorachi has made it clear that Yamazaki will never appear on the cover of a Gintama volume.
His name is derived from the historical figure Yamazaki Susumu.
