Early in Rolan's childhood, his parents died under mysterious circumstances, leaving him poor and starving on the streets. Rolan was constantly ignored by others, and his life seemed destined to end in despair. One day, a group of kids stealing food accidentally left a large amount behind him, leading the owner of the stolen food to blame and severely abuse Rolan, worsening his already dire situation.
Shortly after this incident, Phantom, the leader of the Chess Pieces, found Rolan and showed him kindness by giving him food to survive. Before Phantom left, he asked Rolan if he would follow him. Rolan took Phantom's hand, and they walked out of Rolan's home village together. Wanting to serve Phantom, Rolan joined the Chess Pieces. According to Alan, Rolan fought in the first War Games as a Rook or Bishop and is now a Knight. He has battled Alviss three times, losing two of those encounters. Rolan can manipulate stone and shares a zombie tattoo with Alviss.
Rolan's desperate loyalty to Phantom stems from his fear of being abandoned again, as he experienced when his parents left him. Even though Phantom hasn't shown much affection towards him, Rolan fights for eternity and for Phantom, driven by the desire to avoid the pain of abandonment.
